Many French people know the expression “drunk as a Pole” (which, in their eyes, is pejorative), but few know that these words of Napoleon have their roots in a glorious event.

In 1808, French forces under attack by the Spanish were helped by the Polish who, after a short time, overcame the Spanish.

Because, on the evening before the fight, the French had drank with the Polish, an admiring Napoleon said to his troops: “If you want to get drunk, get drunk like the Poles”, as the Polish soldiers were fit despite the quantity of alcohol they had consumed
